It is with a heavy heart that the Haldane Outlook Humors Board releases the following statement. Tough times have befallen Haldane’s account balance. As a result, the 9D softball field is scheduled for demolition to make room for a new, community-minded, and innovative project: our very own data center.
But how did we get here? The following quotes have been lifted from an interview with a member of the Haldane faculty, who only agreed to said interview on the grounds that their name be omitted from the article. Several quotes required slight extrapolation on the part of the Outlook staff, as the faculty member was “Still getting used to talking with these new platinum grills.”
According to the staff member, the proposed budget for Haldane’s 2026-2027 school year did not contain enough leeway for “necessary expenditures.” According to our source, these expenditures include Haldane “H” branded Porsche 911s to “increase school spirit and Blue Devil pride,” and a revamped and refurbished teacher’s lounge, because “when was the last time you thought of the well-being of your teachers, huh?” While these purchases were completely necessary, the expenses have nearly completely drained the school budget, as well as the 30 million dollar budget for the Haldane Capital Project. Although several ideas have been tossed around to fix the deficit, including making school lunches cost 40 dollars for the next 20 years, the board of education eventually settled on a more direct economic strategy to fix our crisis, because it just so happens that Anthropic is in need of some prime real estate.
Let’s face it, folks. Baseball and softball are dying sports. No longer can we honestly claim them to be “America’s Pastime” when we all know basketball is just so much more entertaining. We must get with the times. And more importantly, Haldane’s 9D softball field provides a golden opportunity for pulling us out of financial debt. Fortunately, the generous, homegrown American corporation Anthropic has offered a deal: they rescue us from our financial crisis, and we provide them with prime land for a data center.
Although no official announcement has been made regarding this under-the-table deal, members of the Cold Spring community have begun to notice several slight, barely noticeable changes to the landscape of the 9D field. As of right now, the only noticeable change to the field’s landscape is the addition of a construction trailer, which has taken up permanent residence as shortstop.
Freshman Allegra Clementson, the pitcher of the Haldane softball team, has expressed major concerns with the effects of Anthropic’s recent acquisition of the field. “I blame our recent loss to Dobbs Ferry on these developments. It was incredibly off-putting to practice while being observed by two dozen vague, yet menacing corporate agents.” Dobbs Ferry won against Haldane on June 1, ending the softball season and leaving the 9D field open and available. “I have my suspicions,” said Softball Coach Jeffrey Sniffen.
In a ploy to distract from new construction and minimize counterproductive protest, Anthropic has reportedly placed two full teams of lifelike mannequins on the field to mimic a game being played at all times. The fleet of incredibly realistic mannequins has drawn a crowd of tourists, eager to get in on the local sports scene of the Hudson Valley. One tourist commented, “I was always told that baseball and softball games are incredibly slow, but this is a new level of impressive! I mean, the pitcher and batter have been trapped in a staring contest since Monday.” Construction is slated to begin as soon as 2-3 more local officials “get on board with the Anthropic family.” Estimates begin at 2 weeks.
