On May 29, Haldane’s Habitat Revival Club traveled to the Garrison Youth Climate Summit at Garrison Union Free School. Schools from across the county gathered to learn more about the environment and how they can preserve it. Club president Sofia Kelly presented about students taking climate action at their schools and used the club’s goat project as a reference to try to inspire students.
Sophomore and Habitat Revival Club member Scout Thakur de Beer said, “I thought it went wonderfully, I had a lot of fun, and I am really glad I got to see Sofia’s presentation. She structured it really well, and there was a lot of discussion of what she did and how you can go forth and create your own programs. One of the adults mentioned that she really appreciated that Sofia recognized the obstacles as well as the successes.”
In addition, freshmen Allegra Clementson and Clara Schimming put together a poster board and talked about their compost project at Haldane. This project was started two years ago by Clementson, and Schimming joined the project that year. The project has led to Haldane using a commercial compost provider, CRP Sanitation.
The opportunity to present at the Garrison Climate Summit helped to spread awareness about the compost project and gather more support. Students who attended the summit were able to explore other stations and classes as well.
Schimming said, “Personally, I feel like the Youth Climate Summit was more fun when I was younger. Now they focus more on presentations and less on hands-on activities. The best part was being able to spend time with my club members and learning a little bit more about our environment.”
