Three years ago, Haldane didn’t even have a varsity softball team. Today, the Blue Devils are league champions, and softball is one of the most successful teams in the school. Coached by social studies teacher Jeffrey Sniffen, assistant coach Ira Solomon, and science teacher Brian Douglas, the softball program captured its most successful season yet. They finished the playoffs with a loss to Dobbs Ferry with a final score of 4-1. Overall, they finished their season ranked second in the section and first in the league.
With the very young team they possess, the future of Haldane softball looks bright. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of all of the coaches and players, the team has found success after only three years and is ready to keep improving.
Jeffrey Sniffen, coach:
“The season has gone really well for us. I’m super proud of how we’ve gelled as a team. I’m also super proud of how the kids have developed and taken steps forward with every practice and every game. We’ve had a really tough schedule this year. We’ve had the opportunity to score a lot of bonus points (points teams earn for playing strong and successful opponents), and we’ve been fortunate enough to win 15 out of our 20 games. [Freshman] Allegra Clementson, who has been a superstar for us in pitching, and [sophomore] Lainey Donaghy and [ junior] Sydney Merriman have been not just awesome captains but also awesome players on the field. Super excited with the youth that we have: kids like [eighth grader] Mackenzie Tobin, [and eighth grader] Nora Jean Cotter; the future is bright.”
Allegra Clementson, freshman:
“Haldane softball had such a great season. Our defense was on point all year, and I am so glad I got to be a part of this team. It was a little disappointing how our year ended, but we got so far and have even more motivation for next year.”
Lainey Donaghy, sophomore:
“I think we had a really successful season overall. By the end of the season, the team had a lot of chemistry, and we’re playing really well together. Our hitting was the only thing holding us back, and I think we will definitely hit better next year. I have super high expectations for our future.”
