While cascading snow and frigid air may dissuade some from braving the outdoors, the Haldane Indoor Track Team embraces the wild conditions. The season kicked off on November 17, 2025, and with more athletes than ever before, the track team is off to a strong start.
“We are making progress, and we will be ready for our championship meets as we get closer to the end of the season,” remarked Head Coach A.J. McConville. The vast majority of meets are held on weekends at the Nike Track and Field Center at The Armory, in Washington Heights, Manhattan, while a few are organized closer to Haldane at Rockland Community College.
In the meantime, the 55 athletes spend their afternoons practicing tirelessly both in the halls of the Middle School and outdoors, embracing the elements if the weather permits.
For those curious about joining the team or unsure of which events to partake in, second-season sophomore Diem Lee suggested giving field events a shot. “It’s nice to try a variety of events. There is a common misconception that track is just about running, when really, it’s much more than that,” he said. As a triple jump fanatic, he describes the event as “unique from other events” and encourages new athletes to step outside their comfort zones.
Only a couple of months into the season, the team is already showing profound development in all areas of the sport. “After the first two track meets, we have had three people qualify for Adidas Nationals, and three or four are on their way,” announced Assistant Coach Williams. Currently, juniors Rhys Williams, Silas Emig, and senior Owen Powers have qualified for Adidas Nationals. “It’s been a record-breaking year. Haldane has many promising track stars of the future.”
