At Haldane, Homecoming week represents a time of unity, as events such as the Homecoming dance, pep rally, and the main event, the Homecoming games, bring out the school spirit in the Haldane community. The Homecoming games, in particular, are an integral part of Haldane culture and serve as the highlight of Homecoming week. This year, Haldane’s volleyball, tennis, soccer, and football teams were scheduled to face a variety of opponents throughout the end of September. Although the tennis game was unfortunately canceled due to rain, all other games proceeded as scheduled.
The volleyball team played against the Leffell School, and it was perhaps one of the most memorable homecoming games of the year. Haldane lost the first two sets, and it seemed as if all hope was lost. However, determined to win, Haldane made a comeback and ultimately won the game 3-2 after winning three sets in a row. When asked about his opinion on the game, junior Rhys Williams said, “It was a real nailbiter.”
The varsity boys soccer team faced off against Webutuck High School in what ended up being a close game. “We were expecting an exciting and intense game and hoping for a big home crowd,” said varsity captain Roth Westphal. Haldane and Webutuck went blow for blow, exchanging goals until the final whistle, when the Blue Devils ultimately won 5-4. “It was an extremely exciting game and I was on the edge of my seat up until the final whistle,” said senior Leo Grocott.
The varsity girls’ soccer team was pitted against rival school North Salem High School, and it suffered a crushing defeat, despite the team’s best efforts. Senior Owen Sullivan-Hoch said, “it was a hard-fought battle, and it was a disappointing result, but they worked hard through the final whistle.”
Lastly, the varsity football homecoming game against Pelham Memorial High School was one of the most anticipated homecoming games of the year, and it did not disappoint. While the football team ultimately lost the game, during the first half, the score was close. Junior Marco DiLello commented, “Attending the football homecoming game is always fun. Haldane football gave it their all, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get the win. Regardless, it was still a very fun game to watch.”
