There’s a new teacher in the Haldane band room. For years, Haldane musicians have enjoyed Jessica Stein’s presence in the classroom. Currently, Stein is out on maternity leave, and Eric Dalio is taking her place for the year. Dalio, originally from Colorado, now lives in New Paltz. He taught at the High School for Public Service for 16 years before coming to Haldane. Before teaching, he was a professional flute, clarinet, and saxophone player, playing genres from classical to hip-hop. Most recently, he spent a decade playing with a West African group as he became especially interested in Afro-Cuban music.
Dalio shared that he enjoys teaching all the instruments, especially beginners. He has only been at Haldane for a few months, but has already noticed a welcoming and supportive environment. He says, “The students are amazing to work with and seem so excited, happy to be here, and ready to learn.” Dalio also shares that the entire community, including staff and faculty, has been incredibly helpful and supportive. He is very excited to see all levels of music improve and grow during the time he is here: “Most importantly, I want Ms. Stein’s program to stay strong. I also want students to learn from my approach, which may be different. I really believe in students expressing themselves as creative musicians. I’m also a big believer in project-based learning where students can create new music and do something that speaks to them and helps them develop their own voice,” said Dalio.
Dalio will teach at Haldane for the first and most of the second quarter. He hopes to encourage students to grow, learn, and improve as musicians and people. For those who want to support the Haldane band, they will be holding a winter concert in early December.
