Alexa Arcigal is a committed junior at Haldane High School who is focused on her artwork. She has been commissioned around the school, and her art hangs in rooms 215, 119, and the hallways. Currently, a new project is underway.
Over the years, Haldane has been decorated with numerous student artworks. Alexa Arcigal is one of those students, bringing color and creativity to the school. Starting with a mural in the elementary school, she became known for her unique and crisp style. Arcigal has also done paintings for Haldane Drama’s sets and has drawn multiple famed scientific figures for biology teacher Mark Patinella.
On November 24 of this year, Arcigal began her latest venture, requested by history teacher Michelle Cordaro: a representation of two Egyptian figures on the wall of room 115. When asked what the mural would depict, Cordaro answered that it would be a scene from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, known informally as “The Trial of Hunefer”.
Cordaro described how Hunefer was a scribe known for his illustrations depicting his own journey through the afterlife. Cordaro explained, “In this particular section, he’s being guided by Anubis, the god of the underworld, to weigh his heart against the Feather of Truth.”
It is a unique accomplishment to have one’s work be presented so prominently and permanently around the school. Arcigal observed, “Everyone wants to do something that they can be remembered for at school. It’s interesting to leave behind a story that people can tell about you when you go away.” Deeds are not the only way to be remembered, but also how you inspire others. “Even while I’m teaching, students are looking at the walls; it would be nice for them to be learning while they’re ignoring me!”, joked Cordaro.
Cordaro hopes these feats will encourage future generations to also share what they have to offer. Students can see these artworks as a chance to also make a mark on their school. In the years to come, visitors will be able to view the piece as a symbol of the passion inspired in students by their teachers.
