The Challenge of Journalism
In January 2025 a headline in Forbes began, “Grieve the Loss of Local Newspapers …“ There’s no grieving in Philipstown which now boasts three local papers.
Since publishing its first edition, The Haldane Outlook has lived up to its frontpage tagline, “The Student Perspective from Two Hundred Feet Above the Hudson River.”
Your coverage of issues that affect life well beyond the Haldane campus – from Hunger, Sexual Education and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the Columbus Day Debate, Civic Engagement, and yes, even the ever-popular Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail, has provided an important perspective that is too often minimized if not completely ignored.
Carl Bernstein has been quoted as saying: “Good journalism should challenge people, not just mindlessly amuse them.” Keep challenging your readers; keep challenging your community. And thank you.
