Haldane golf is slowly making its way out of the rough and becoming one of the biggest teams at Haldane, one swing at a time.
After having only eight members the previous season, this year defied all expectations, with the team boasting 28 players. Referring to the rise in team membership, George Stubbs, a junior, remarked, “Seeing the team go from eight players to 28 players in the course of a year was truly astonishing.”
Last year, senior Jake Powers and George Stubbs were the first students in Haldane golf history to receive All-League awards, bolstering the club’s popularity.
Another reason for Haldane golf’s rising popularity is a simple one: it’s fun. Senior Wilson Robohm, who’s quite good with the driver, said, “Golf helps me get outside, and it feels freeing to be on that back nine.”
The golfers always have a good time playing, hitting the links outside with their friends. Jake Powers, another senior, stated, “Golf has brought a new light into my life, and helped me build strong bonds with my friends and teammates.”
A reason why a lot of people are unfamiliar with the golf team is that not many know where they practice and play. The team’s practice course is actually close by, in Garrison, on the Highlands Golf Course.
Before the great rise in team members, the team struggled. Last season, the first with their new coach, elementary school teacher Josiah Peparo, the team only won one match. But with a team that contained a lot of first-time players last year, that was to be expected. However, the team is still optimistic about their future. Sophomore Connor Keegan, a rising golf talent, said, “I have no doubt that we will be on a state run in the next two years.” With this mindset, everyone is hopeful for many good years to come for the golf squad.
